Top 3 Behind Manchester’s Doors highlights

Two weeks ago, the Careers Service took a group of first year students to different offices around Manchester City centre, to see what life in a 9-5 could look like. We explored sectors like Law, Media, PR and Communications, as well as Government and the Public Sector.

I was lucky enough to be invited to the Media, PR and Communications day, and see the gorgeous Ancoats office of HighRise Communications. Here’s my top 3 highlights – I hope this inspires you to check out what Manchester office life could look like for you post-uni!

1. How beautiful the office was

Look at the photo above for reference! Free coffee, team breakfast every Tuesday and the most incredible neon lights and colourful design for an office space. Made me realise that 2023 office life isn’t rows and rows of dull 2005 Windows monitors – it’s actually an exciting place to spend a 9-5.

2. The location

Ancoats is ever so slightly out of the city centre, but a 5 minute walk back to the hustle of Northern Quarter. It feels like a more mature and sophisticated older sibling to NQ, teeming with artisan coffee shops and huge, modern office blocks. I should also note that the weather was beautifully sunny on this day, which made everything look 10x more attractive!

3. An insight into a day in the life of a marketing agency

The company I visited, HighRise Communications, are a small agency of around 8 people, who work on big marketing campaigns for brands like Adidas, as well as huge investment firms and charities. They cover such a variety of creative content, and everyone loved hearing about their latest collaboration with Adidas to raise money for a hospice. It was surprising and and encouraging to see a marketing company who are interested in the ethical side of things, too! 🙂
